The regions on Mars include some of the deepest canyons and highest mountains in the Solar System. Many basins are below the average surface height, creating interest that water once pooled as vast lakes and oceans, an excellent starting point for the search for life. Deep canyons and valleys may provide shelter for future manned missions and the boulder-shrewn plains continue to throw up unexpected surprises for our robotic explorers.
