Hydraulics

Hydraulics is a technology for automation. On Mars it is very useful, since it can be produced and maintained with simple means.

Use cases in automation

A hydraulic temperature control works without auxiliary power. The principle is based upon the thermodynamic change of volume due to changes in temperatures. A vessel filled with hydraulic oil produces an increasing pressure when temperature is rising. The pressure is used to move a piston, connected to a valve.

Use cases for fluid power

• The tools of digging machines are moved by hydraulic power.
• Heavy hatches can be locked by hydraulics.
• Brakes in cars are usually hydraulic.
