Rice is a staple food in many parts of Earth.

Rice requires care to achieve substantial yields, and it has been suggested that the difference between rice and wheat cultivation is the source of significant cultural differences in societies that practice different types of agriculture[1][2].

Modern rice cultivation can have yields of 10 tonnes per hectare per year or more. This is similar to other basic crops. Rice on Mars is therefore likely to be part of the basic food production system.

Rice can be grown hydroponically or on prepared substrates.
