Education will be essential to the continued viability of any permanent settlement. Unless there is a constant influx of educated colonists from Earth, the long term health of the colony will depend on a well educated population. Skilled workers are needed for equipment maintenance and engineering. In the beginning, when populations are small, there may not be enough people to support a specialized educator. Education could involve distance learning with Earth based teachers or apprenticeships with adults in the settlement.
