Recreation is part of life. A Mars settlement needs to compete with Earth as a living environment, and this includes providing recreating opportunities and recreation facilities.
As an Earth example of this a typical isolated construction camp designed for occidental workers will require at the minimum a gym, sports facilities such as ping pong, pool and eventually tennis, badminton or basketball. In Canada, for example, even fairly small villages have sports arenas and enclosed ice hockey rinks.
