Mars has many surface features that are similar to these on Earth, and a few unique to the planet.

Mars is roughly divided into two types of areas: The older Southern hemisphere, heavily cratered and at a relatively high altitude and the younger northern hemisphere, with a few significant asteroid impact and large plains.

Mars is also marked by three significant geological features: The Tharsis bulge, with a large number of volcanoes including the famous Olympus Mons, the Valles Marineris canyon(s) and the Hellas basin.
