Erupting lava flows often form a lava tube as the outer surfaces of the flow are cooled by the atmosphere and surrounding rock. Once the eruption ends, the remaining lava drains from the tube, leaving an empty cave.

Settlement

Lava tubes are an ideal site for a settlement, providing shelter from radiation and space that can be converted into habitable areas.
