A Missile Defense System is a system that is designed to protect against missiles. There are several possible types of Missile Defense System: anti-missile rockets, mass drivers, and directed energy.

The need for missiles defense on mars seems unlikely, however similar technologies can be used for asteroid deflection.

  • Anti-missile rockets are designed to defend against long to medium range threats, such as ICBMs.
  • Mass Drivers are designed to defend against short range threats, such as anti-ship missiles. however, as an asteroid defences system the range can be significantly extended.
  • Directed Energy systems, such as Lasers, are designed to be effective at any range, depending on the power.
  • Research and development of Missile defense systems could benefit future attempts at defeating asteroid threats, both to spacecraft and to settlements.

One can assume that this is a very low level of priority for any realistic Martian settlement. the threat of asteroid impact is quite low on Mars, although higher than on Earth.
