Talk:Inflatable habitat
Rick: Hi Michel, I disagree. An advantage to rigid structures is that we can stack sandbags on them, if that is deemed to have a net increase in safety. Admittedly, if the rigid structure is smooth and sloping, they would slide off, but presumably if NASA decides that some sand bags are a good idea, the structure will be built for them.
I see part of the purpose of this site is to point out trade offs of competing ideas. If we go into the weeds, rigid structures might not be well shaped for stacking, or inflatable structures could be made to work for this idea, but let's keep it simple when we can. People understand that with effort exceptions can be made.
The stacking sandbags caveat is a bit weird. I would like to get rid if it altogether since it also applies to circular rigid structures.
Any buried inflatable will probably be covered with non structural geotextile membrane for protection against punctures, so I don't see the point.
