NASA is working on the Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) missions. The first has successfully completed, the second is scheduled to begin in spring of 2025, and the last sometime in 2026. [1]
These are Mars Analog missions, similar to the Mars Society Analog Stations but for a longer duration (one year) and with more budget. They take place on the Johnson space centre near Houston TX.
The missions take place is a small 3D printed work area, with 158 m^2 for the 4 crew. There is in addition, small 'sand box' area where they can do a simulated Mars walks outside the hab.
Mission 1
The first CHAPEA mission began on June 25, 2023. It had 4 crew members: Kelly Haston, a research scientist and the mission's commander, Ross Brockwell, a structural engineer and public works administrator, Nathan Jones, an emergency medicine physician, and Anca Selariu, a microbiologist. The mission concluded July 6, 2024,[13] with a total duration time of 378 days.
The crew grew veggies, handled break downs and other emergencies, dealt with resource limitations, and had up to a 22 minute delay on all communications.
After more than a year, the crew exited, with good morale.
