Piezoelectricity is the generation of electricity as a direct result of mechanical deformation, or deformation of a material as a direct result of electricity. Certain ceramics, crystals, and even polymers display this property.

Use

Energy Generation

Floors in a settlement could generate small amounts of electricity. Part of the energy from resident's footsteps would be transformed by piezoelectric generators embeded in the floors.

Sensors

Piezoelectric sensors are low maintenance and consume little, if any, electricity.

Actuators

Piezoelectric materials can be used as actuators. They are useful for applications requiring a high degree of control.

Open Issues

  • How easily can these materials be produced from local resources?
  • How much maintenance is required?
