Venus is the second planet from the sun, after Mercury and before Earth. It has an extremely thick atmosphere, and temperatures at the surface are hot enough to melt lead. However, at an altitude of approximately 50 kilometers, the pressure and atmospheric temperature are Earth-like. It has been suggested that floating settlements, using breathable air as a lifting gas, could be used to colonize Venus. Unfortunately, due to a lack of mining opportunities, the settlements can not be built from local resources. Decomposing sulfuric acid, H2SO4, may provide breathing oxygen and water for life-support.
