Mars 2 was the sister mission to the also partially successful Mars 3 mission launched by the Soviet Union in the early 1970s.

The orbiter sent back data from December 1971 to March 1972 and was still in communication with earth until August.

The lander crashed, and it is presumed that the angle of the landing was too steep.
