Because of the low Martian gravity muscles may be utilized inadequately by daily duties. Additional Physical exercise may be required every day to prevent muscular and skeletal atrophy. However, no Mars level gravity experiments have ever been conducted to confirm this.
Depending upon the settlement layout the dwellers may be forced to walk long distances and use stairs for their routine duties. Long distances for walking could occur within a system of artificial caves. Walking alone may not be sufficient and the settlers may be require to go through a complex routine of exercises to stimulate all muscles.
In an established colony, exercising in a centrifuge may mitigate the effects of low gravity.
Effects on the human body
- Stimulates the immune system
- Helps to prevent certain types of diabetes by influencing the metabolism
- Prevents cardiovascular diseases
- Prevents arthritis
- Lift spirits by generating endorphins
- May help to reduce bone (calcium) loss.
Integrated energy generation
Physical exercise can be combined with the generation of energy. There are many possible ways to generate electricity. A dynamo could be built in every stationary bicycle. Piezoelectric elements can be a part of some exercise equipment. Compressed-air can be produced by connected mechanical air pump.
However, this will always use more energy than it produces, as the food required for the exercise must gets its energy from another source, and the energy conversion processes of exercise are fairly inefficient.
