Future Martian settlers will have to live in an artificial environment, requiring a number of machines and processes to keep the habitat stable. Temperature and air composition must be controlled. Automation technology can help to free the settlers from doing it manually, allowing more productive work, such as the extension of the colony. Other possible tasks to be automated are the watering, fertilizing, and harvesting of greenhouse grown produce. People would monitor these functions, adjust the automatic settings or redo the automated setup occasionally as required to meet colony goals.
A number of technologies can be incorporated in automated functions:
- Pneumatics
- Hydraulics
- Electronics
- Artificial intelligence
- Metal carbonyl casting or 3D printing
