Colonists on Mars will live under special circumstances, possibly causing psychological problems. There might be the risk of somebody running amok, endangering the whole colony. The following attacks are possible:

  • Destruction of life support (oxygen, temperature, water)
  • Contamination of air or food with radioactive, chemical or bacteriological substances
  • Destruction or contamination of greenhouses
  • Disconnection or destruction of energy network
  • Disconnection or destruction of telecommunication network
  • Explosion, causing drop in air pressure
  • Destruction of vehicles that are needed to reach peripheral sites of the colony
  • Destruction of equipment that is needed for maintenance of vital systems

This risk and the implications can be mitigated by some precautions. This page is meant to develop preventive concepts to make the colony safe against such attacks.

Psychological surveillance

Periodic testing and group training can help to diagnose and counteract psychological illnesses early.

Technical precautions

The Fail-safe principles are mandatory for buildings and vital systems. For a single person it must not be possible to create a situation that causes a complete failure in the colony.
