A settlement on Mars is an artificial habitat, supported by several technical systems. The construction of the systems require a variety of elements and materials, that have to be produced from local Martian resources in order to build an autonomous colony. This page comprises knowledge about the difference and viability of Hi-tech and Lo-tech elements.

Generally, all hi-tech elements need a whole industry behind. Rare minerals are needed in conjunction with chemical plants. Cleanrooms and complex machinery are required. Many people are engaged. The population of a Martian colony might not be able to provide such amount of manpower.

Unlike with lo-tech. All elements can be made from simple materials, like iron and plastics. The manufacture can be made manually.
